How To Tell If You Should Have Your Old Car Wrecked

No one likes to admit it, but there comes a time when trying to repair or upgrade a vehicle so badly damaged or completely spent just becomes far more trouble than it is worth. The issue is trying to realize when that point is, which many people struggle with. Before you spend thousands or even tens of thousands of dollars trying to rescue a lost cause, you need to know whether or not your car is worth saving. Here are a few signs that will help you make the right choice and either let your car go to the car wrecker or the mechanic.

Structural Damage

After any kind of collision, whether it was you hit something or something hit you, you need to have your car inspected by a mechanic who will let you know how bad the structural damage is. While most individual components can be switched out and fixed, structural damage is not something that is easy to repair, and is generally not worth it. A car wrecker will first strip your vehicle of its still valuable parts, give you a good price for them, and then take care of the rest of the vehicle so that its metal and material can be reused.

Electrical Systems Dying

When the electrical systems in your car start to behave strangely, it is easy to assume that all you need to do is replace your battery and you will be back on the road again in no time. This is not always the case, particularly with older cars, and sometimes the issue is not located squarely with your battery but is endemic to your entire electrical system. From fried cabling to destruction from rain and the elements, electrical systems can and do fail all the time. Sometimes these can be a simple fix but often, particularly if the car is old, replacing it is the simplest and cheapest option as even if fixed, this problem can happen again and again.

Mold And Rot

An often underrated aspect when it comes to the suitability of your car to drive is how clean and safe the interior is. If you or the previous owners of the car have been a little less than careful and mold and rot have taken hold on the interior then it may simply not be worth it to save the car, particularly if you do have other mechanical problems as well. Moldy seats and rotting objects are not easy to fix, and have to be completely torn out and replaced with similar, hard-to-find materials that can be far too expensive to justify.
